Mistral AI MCP Hackathon

Yongkang Zou · 2025-09-14 · hackathon · Music & Audio AI

I built one of my coolest hackathon projects in under 24 hours as a solo team. It did not make the finalist stage at the Mistral AI MCP Hackathon. I am still incredibly proud of the result.

Vibe Coding Music

I saw the Ableton MCP x Claude project recently and it made me ask a simple question. Why not connect an open-source DAW directly to LeChat?

That question turned into Musixtral. It is an MCP server that lets LeChat users vibe code their music projects right in their browser.

Here is what the integration handles:

  • Connects a revised version of OpenDAW to Mistral LeChat.
  • Controls music production using natural language commands. You can edit tracks, create melodies or drum patterns, apply Reverb and EQ, and export the final audio.
  • Stores project files directly in S3.
  • Integrates with 'MusicToolkit MCP', a secondary tool I built during the event for tasks like audio-to-score rendering.

Try it Yourself

You can test the project via the Mistral LeChat MCP connectors. Search for 'Musixtral' in the tools section. You will need to use my revised OpenDAW version to make the connection work.

You can also check out the code on GitHub: OpenDAW_MCP.

Acknowledgements

Huge thanks to the Alpic team, especially Frédéric Barthelet, for their MCP hosting service and guidance. I also appreciate the feedback from Joffrey THOMAS at Mistral AI. His input gave me great ideas for what to build next. Thank you to the hackathon partners: Motier Ventures, Weights & Biases, Bria AI, and Cerebral Valley.

A special shout-out goes to André Michelle. He is the creator of the original open-source DAW that made this entire experiment possible.

Music remains a niche market for AI right now. I see huge potential in it and plan to keep exploring this space. If you want to discuss AI and music ideas, feel free to reach out.
